When it comes to purchasing candles, consumers have a choice between soy or paraffin wax. Soy wax is healthier for many reasons. As someone who suffers from allergies, and a son with asthma, it's important to keep my home free of chemicals and harsh irritants. I've always loved candles but was often worried when I'd see black smoke or soot on the jar. This lead me to creating my own soy candles. I became passionate about learning how to keep dyes and chemicals out of my candles, yet still create a strong fragrance and extended burn time
So you probably have heard soy wax is a cleaner choice, simply because it is made from soy beans. Therefore, soy wax does not release toxins. Paraffin wax, on the other hand, is made from petroleum. Burning paraffin candles in your home is like running a car engine inside. The same black soot you see on a paraffin candle can be found on your car's exhaust..yuck! Think about that for a moment. When you light a paraffin candle, all the carcinogens being released in the air are also going into your family's lungs. This is not safe for any of us, including our children and beloved pets.
A 2017 Stanford University article (completed for coursework) found paraffin candles give off toxic chemicals such as toluene and benzene. Why would we want to fill our homes with cancer-causing agents? In addition, by replacing paraffin candles with soy, we would be greatly benefiting soybean farmers.
Indoor air pollution is getting more attention and I know, as a wife and mom, I want to do all I can to keep my family safe and healthy. I love the flickering glow of a candle, as well as the amazing fragrance, but not at the risk of my loved ones' health. There are a variety of ways to keep harsh chemicals out of our homes and burning clean, chemical-free candles is a great start!
If you are still burning paraffin candles in your home, switch today and keep your inside air fresh and clean.
